Estimation of climatic favourable areas for locust outbreaks in Spain: integrating species' presence records and spatial information on outbreaks

Abstract: For millennia, locust swarms have recurrently devastated crop productivity across continents. In much of Europe, locust outbreaks have been considerably reduced by human pressure in recent decades, but important foci of outbreaks still exist in Spain. Distribution models are often used to derive spatial hypotheses and risk maps. Because insufficient information is available to include the extreme plasticity of the solitary and gregarious phases of locusts in large-scale spatial models, we modelled the distribu… Show more

“…To address errors associated with latitude and the commonly encountered overfitting problem identified in Maxent (Anderson & Raza, 2010;Elith et al, 2011;Radosavljevic & Anderson, 2014), bias files were created. The first bias file corrected the error associated with latitudinal accuracy of coordinate data where areas farther from the equator have greater positional error.…”

“…Species distribution modelling (SDM) is increasingly being used to map the ranges of pest insects (e.g. Aragon et al, 2010Aragon et al, , 2013Aragon & Lobo, 2012;Macfadyen & Kriticos, 2012;Kriticos et al, 2015b;Godefroid et al, 2016;Kumar et al, 2016). As mentioned above, these models define the realised niche of species and by delineating the potential areas that have the required environmental conditions to maintain viable populations, they can be used to identify the areas under risk of invasion under present climatic conditions (e.g.…”

“…Collections from different source populations or markedly different dates should also be included among the set of vouchered specimens. Specimens in collections also add locales that can parameterize ENM analyses (Aragón et al, 2013). Accurate labeling and related referencing of specimens deposited in museums and or databases are essential.…”
