Estimation of coefficients of consolidation and permeability via piezocone dissipation tests

Abstract: As an efficient treatment in soft ground, the drainage consolidation methods have been widely used in the engineering. Accordingly, the numerical technical also develops rapidly. The vacuum load is newly added in Plaxis3D AE and the effect of this new feature is discussed in this paper. A simple axial symmetric finite element model with sand well is established to investigate the influence of permeability coefficient on the horizontal consolidation. The results show that as the permeability coefficient of the … Show more

“…From the set of possible solutions, a target solution is chosen as the one associated with the smallest error (i.e., higher fitness). The principle of the method used is analogous to the piezocone dissipation test methods (e.g., [30][31][32]). As indicated earlier, the main issue in consolidation studies is the theoretical assumption of immediate load transfer to soil skeleton from the pore water after the load's application.…”

“…Thus, a novel method is proposed in this study in which a gradient-based algorithm for finding optimal value of c v is incorporated. The principle of the presented method is similar to the piezocone dissipation test method [2,7,10,22,31,55,58] and relates c v to the permeability of the soil rather than to its compressibility. Furthermore, the concept of instantaneous c v was used to illustrate the nonlinear consolidation behaviour and to study the difference in consolidation time at the end of primary consolidation determined by using two types of laboratory data.…”
