Estimation of Colchicine in a Poisoned Patient by Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract: A rapid method was developed for the estimation of colchicine in plasma. The method was used to determine colchicine levels in a fatal case of colchicine self-poisoning.

“…Colchiceine can be present in plant extracts besides colchicine, or can appear as a degradation product on storage of 1. [8][9][10][11] Colchiceine can easily form complexes with most of silica based phases, which can be explained by the properties of its ring system especially ring C with a hydroxyl group at C-10 position and neighbouring carbonyl group at carbon atom C-9. It is difficult to detect and separate colchiceine from plant extracts because of its chelating properties.…”

“…Furthermore, even if taken in very large doses, it may not always be detected in the blood [16,17]. Colchicine also enters enterohepatic circulation before entering the bile and feces.…”

“…31 Given the poor safety profile of colchicine, it is of concern that participants did not know the maximum dosage of colchicine, giving rise to risky behaviour and increasing the potential for overdose. [12][13][14] Sharing of medicines was not widespread in this study, but this practice increases the risk of a potential overdose. Colchicine can be fatal in overdose and treatment options for overdose remain limited.…”
