Estimation of conflicting traffic volume using spatiotemporal factor

Abstract: Conflict traffic volume is one of the crucial parameters for U-turn capacity estimation at the mid-block median opening (MBMO). Therefore, the present study is undertaken for the estimation of conflicting traffic volumes at MBMO. In this regard, a simple yet practical methodology has been proposed, and a parameter named spatiotemporal conflicting factor has been introduced. In order to estimate spatial conflicting factor, the entire carriageway-width was divided into two zones namely, spatial conflict zone and… Show more

“…Operations at MBMOs are more complex compared with signalized intersections where signals are installed for guiding the traffic whereas no such arrangements are available at MBMOs. Moreover, in India, most MBMO locations are not controlled by traffic police nor are yield signs provided, and even if in some places signs are provided, drivers with unruly driving behavior tend not to follow them (4)(5)(6)(7). Therefore, estimation of capacity of an MBMO is an important task to evaluate its performance under prevailing conditions.…”

“…The mid-block median opening (MBMO) is a location provided in the raised median to enable U-turns and to allow vehicles to merge with the approaching through traffic (ATT) stream. The MBMO is a location where traffic operation relies entirely on the driver’s perception, making it very similar to an uncontrolled intersection ( 8 , 9 ). U-turning vehicles tend to make aggressive and risky turns, forcing the ATT to reduce its speed so that they can complete the U-turn ( 10 , 11 ).…”
