Estimation of Elastic Modulus of Rock Using Modified Point-Load Test

Abstract: An alternative method for determining the elastic modulus of sandstone using a point-load test (PLT) is presented. The PLT was modified to obtain the relationship curve between the test load and the displacement of the load platen. A model is modified to establish the relationship between the elastic modulus and the slope of the linear portion of the curve. Several types of sandstone specimens with different sizes were used in the tests conducted to examine the validity of the proposed method. The results show… Show more

“…e obtained elastic section of load-penetration depth relationship and elastic modulus was used to make a back-calculation of shape coefficient. Furthermore, the influence of Poisson's ratio can be neglected [4]. Poisson's ratio of red sandstone is used for different types of rock.…”

“…erefore, a method which can measure the elastic modulus quickly and conveniently is necessary. Several attempts have been made to develop methods to evaluate the elastic modulus indirectly, such as nanoindentation, needle penetration test, point load test, Brazilian splitting test, and so on [2][3][4][5]. Moreover the Smith rebound tester and borehole elastic modulus method can also measure the modulus effectively in situ [6,7].…”

“…In this method, it is assumed that the damage variable of the micro Young’s modulus of the whole model conforms to the same equation, which is suitable for the inversion of Young’s modulus field of homogeneous materials such as graphite. However, for rock materials affected by the diagenetic process, in-situ stress environment, engineering construction disturbance and specimen processing, the rock before the test has certain initial damage, and the microparameters and macroparameters have obvious discreteness [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The parameter damage of elements of the specimen is difficult to be described by the same quantitative equation.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] During coal mining, roof failures, landslides, spalling, ribbing, and other accidents often occur, [6][7][8][9][10][11] which not only affect the efficiency of the coal mining process but also pose serious threats to coal miners. [12][13][14][15][16][17] Therefore, to prevent such events, highly effective reinforcement materials for crushed coal mine rocks must be used. [18][19][20][21] Currently, the reinforcement of broken coal rocks is performed mainly through grouting.…”
