Estimation of Genetic Variance and Heritability of F2 Populations of Corn Plants in Dry Land

Abstract: This study was aimed to determine the genetic variance of several F2 population traits of maize, broad heritability values and phenotypic correlations between yields and other quantitative traits. The method used is the experimental method. The experiment was designed in a randomized block design, with 6 replications. The number of treatments was 4 populations, namely population F2, Sinta Unram, hybrid NK212 and NK7328. Each population was planted in 4 rows, each consisted of 40 plants. The observed characteri… Show more

“…Characters with high heritability values were plant height, leaf angle, length and width of leaf, ear length and diameter, rows kernel number per ear, number of kernels per row, weight of harvested ears, water content, weight of 1000 kernels and yields. The results of this study were in line with the results obtained in the maize experiment on dry land where several characters such plant height, leave number per plant, ear length, ear diameter, weight of dry ear harvested per plant and yield have high heritability values [14,21]. Similar results were reported for ear lenght and plant height [22], number of kernels per row in maize number of kernel row per ear 1000 grain weight [23,24].…”

“…HA = Harvested area (m 2 ), WC = kernel water content at harvest (%), B = Wet ear weight (kg), R= Shelling percentage and Y=Yield (%). Genotypic and phenotypic diversity values were derived from analysis of variance [14], as presented in Table 1. The grouping of heritability values is H2 > 0.5 (high), 0.2 <H2 <0.5 (medium), and H2 <0.2 (low) [15].…”

“…Additionally, cob length, number of grains per cob, cob diameter, and 100-seed weight have been highlighted as important yield-contributing characters (Gul et al, 2015). Furthermore, harvested dry cobs weight per plant has shown a strong phenotypic correlation with yield, emphasizing its significance as a selection indicator (Sudika et al, 2022).…”

“…The lines produced from free-pollinated crosses had high diversity. Genetic variance and diversity of F2 corn plant populations were found (Sudika et al, 2022).The estimates of genetic effects traits were specific in eachgenotypes (Nabila et al, 2022). According to Juita et al (2022), the F2 and F3 lines from free pollination crosses had better characters than their parents, in which 88.11% of the lines had purple seed color.…”
