Estimation of global lightning activity and observations of atmospheric electric field

Abstract: A b s t r a c tVariations in the global atmospheric electric circuit are investigated using a wide range of globally spaced instruments observing VLF (~10 kHz) waves, ELF (~300 Hz) waves, Schumann resonances (4-60 Hz), and the atmospheric fair weather electric field. For the ELF/VLF observations, propagation effects are accounted for in a novel approach using established monthly averages of lightning location provided by the Lightning Image Sensor (LIS) and applying known frequency specific attenuation paramet… Show more

“…As a result of research programs carried out in the last twenty years, a number of commercial lightning monitoring systems were developed to provide the discharges coordinates and maximum currents [ Richard and Auffray , 1985; Rodger et al , 2006; Mäkelä et al , 2008; Betz et al , 2009]. The studies in the ELF range have a similar direction [ Cummer and Inan , 2000; Hu et al , 2002; Huang et al , 1999; Cummer and Lyons , 2004; Kułak et al , 2010; Gołkowski et al , 2011; Nieckarz et al , 2011].…”

“…Thunderstorm generator hypothesis indicates that charged particles are transferred from the bottom of thunder 4th National Conference on Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering (NCEECE 2015) clouds to the surface of the Earth and from the top of the thunder clouds to the ionosphere. Therefore, there is a close correspondence between the variations of the electrical potential gradient and the variation of thunderstorm and electrical showers clouds occurrence [5,6]. Based on such relationship, the atmosphere electronic field instruments could be placed over a large area and organized in a net to monitor lightning's activity.…”

“…The amplitude of the ELF impulse field in the Earth‐ionosphere waveguide is associated with the vertical component of the (charge) dipole moment in a simple analytical way [ Kułak et al , ]. An ELF station with a single antenna enables measuring electrical lightning activity in the storm centers at a broad range of distances, starting at 0.15 Mm [ Nieckarz et al , ; Gołkowski et al , ].…”
