Estimation of Heavy Metal Levels in the Muscle, Gizzard, Liver and Kidney of Broiler, Layer and Local (Cockerel) Chickens Raised within Awka Metropolis and Its Environs, Anambra State, South Eastern Nigeria

Abstract: 65 chickens (layer, broiler and cockerel) from different farms within Awka metropolis and its environs were purchased, processed and analyzed for the levels of heavy metals (Pb, As, Cd, Ni, Cr, Hg, V and Cu) in the internal organs (muscle, gizzard, liver and kidney) of the chickens using flame atomic absorption spectrometer after nitric/perchloric acid digestion. The ranges of mean concentrations of the metals in the internal organs of the chickens in mg/g were Pb; (0.046-0.478) As; (0.053-0.318), Cd; (0.027-0… Show more

“…The concentration of copper in the liver samples in our study are similar to the findings of Bendeddouche (2004) in Algeria which falls in arrange of 0.005 to 2.30ppm and the findings of Thirulogachander et al(2014) in paladam district of Tamil nadu with a mean value of 2.029ppm. the present findings are higher than the values reported by Okoye et al (2015) which are in a range of 0.115 to 0.445ppm and 0.1583ppm by Parekhan Aljaff (2014).…”

“…The maximum Cd contents (E-1-0.93±0.03 mg/kg and E-2-2.18±0.01 mg/kg) and minimum ones (E-1-0.37±0.06 mg/kg and E-2-1.81±0.01 mg/kg) in chickens' gizzard were found higher than those reported by Okoye et al [63] i.e. (0.156 ± 0.019 mg/kg for layers, 0.131 ± 0.032 mg/kg for broilers, and 0.243 ± 0.039 mg/kg for local chickens got from various sheds) and Iwegbue et al [55] by collecting chickens' gizzard samples from different seven vicinities in Nigeria.…”

“…These metals bio-accumulate in the organs and tissues of animals causing toxicity. This was demonstrated in several studies in which there were varying concentrations of lead in tissues and blood of exposed animals including poultry (Iwegbue et al, 2008;Iwegbue, 2008;Akan et al, 2010;Okoye et al, 2015;Tyokumbur, 2016).…”
