Background: Dimensions of foot and hand are important tools for sexual dimorphism. In case of identification from dismembered part of body study of dimension of these body part may be crucial. Their correlation may be helpful in identification of an individual. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on 100 students of both sexes. Hand length, hand breadth and foot length were measured by sliding caliper and measurements were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. Results: The mean right hand length in male was 17.52 cm and mean right hand length in female was 15.66. The difference was significant (P<0.05). The mean left foot length and right foot length in male were 24.96 and 24.98 respectively and in female 23.29 and 23.35 respectively. The correlation coefficient(R2) of left hand length and left hand breadth was .443. Conclusion: There was significant difference of hand and foot dimensions in male and female. There was the largest correlation coefficient of left hand length and left hand breadth. Key words: Hand length, Foot length, Identification.

Introduction:Amongst the various parameters of identification, sex is one of the most important elements. Figuring out hand index from measurement of hand dimensions is a convenient way to determine sexual dimorphism. This study aims to find out sexual dimorphism from hand dimensions, obtain cut off points for male and female and check percentage accuracy of sex determination from hand dimensions in Nepalese population. Methods: The data was collected from 400 asymptomatic, healthy working staff (229 males and 171 females) above 23 years in the department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of a tertiary care center of Western Nepal. Measurements of hand length and hand breadth were taken using standard instruments and hand index was calculated therefrom. Results: The mean (+SD) right hand lengths for male and female were found to be 17.87 cm (+0.87) and 16.93cm (+0.58) respectively. The mean (+SD) left hand lengths for male and female were 17.85 cm (+0.86)and 16.97 cm (+0.56) respectively. The average hand breadth for male was 1.00 cm greater for right hand and 0.96 cm greater for left hand as compared to female hand breadth. Differences in length and breadth of hands for both sexes were statistically significant (p<0.001) with no statistically significant difference of hand dimensions in the same sex. Cut off point for right hand index was found to be 42.32 cm and for left hand, 42.30 cm. Conclusion: Hand dimensions and hand index can be reliably used to determine sex in medicolegal cases, especially where isolated hand is obtained. Sah SK. et al. Hand Index -A forensic tool for Sexual Dimorphism index are 42.32 and 42.30 respectively. Hand index value more than 42.30 is suggestive of male hand and less than 42.30 is suggestive of female hand. The aim of the study was to estimate the stature from lower limb parameters in the north-west population of India and to know whether a significant correlation exists between the stature and various lower limb dimensions and to further derive regression formulae for estimation of stature from various lower limb segments. Materials and methods: the study was conducted on medical students age ranged between 18 to 28 years, which comes chiefly from north-west part of India. Only the subjects willing to participate in the study and given their written informed consent were included in the study group. The students having any obvious physical deformity were excluded from the study. Correlations between various lower limb parameters and stature were determined by using the Pearson’s correlation test. Sex-specific linear regression equations for stature estimation were developed using the lower limb measurements. The multiple regressions equations were produced based on various combinations of the parameters by stepwise regression analysis. Results: the Pearson’s correlation in combined group showed good correlations between lower limb parameters and stature. There was no statistically significant difference between known stature and estimated stature by using paired T-test for both right and left side in a group consisting of both sexes and in males (p>0.05). Conclusion: from the parameters, lower limb length and foot length had shown strong positive correlations with stature in the north-west Indian population
