Estimation of HIV Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Testing Frequency among Sexually Active Men Who Have Sex with Men, Aged 18–64 Years—New York City, 2002

Abstract: Population-based estimates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence and risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM) are valuable for HIV prevention planning but not widely available, especially at the local level. We combined two population-based data sources to estimate prevalence of diagnosed HIV infection, HIV-associated risk-behaviors, and HIV testing patterns among sexually active MSM in New York City (NYC). HIV/AIDS surveillance data were used to determine the number of living males repo… Show more

“…This is similar to a previous published estimate of the percentage of Texan MSM living with HIV (7.0 %) 28 and several other estimates in other MSM populations using different methodologies. [29][30][31] In all individual counties and metropolitan areas (Table 3) for which MSM population estimates were calculated, the number of MSM living with HIV did not exceed the MSM population, both in total and stratified by race/ethnic group.…”

“…However, almost a third of study participants had their first HIV test when they were in their 30s and 40s. This finding points to the need to encourage and facilitate HIV testing in all age groups (MacKellar et al, 2006;Manning et al, 2007;Rennie, 2006).…”

“…This further raises concerns about access to an adequate and culturally competent continuum of services. Lower income Black men tend not to receive testing at HIV organizations, and so may be an important group for future testing interventions (Manning et al, 2007;Rennie, 2006).…”

“…Based on the HIV prevalence in these risk populations, a high-risk sexual partner was an IDU or had participated in transactional sex (i.e., gave or received sex for money or drugs). [26][27][28] Primary Exposure. Severe physical victimization (yes or no) was assessed for each year over the past 4 years.…”
