Estimation of Homocysteine Level and Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (<b><i>MTHFR</i></b>) Gene and Cystathionine B Synthase (<b><i>CBS</i></b>) Gene Polymorphisms in Vitiligo Patients

Abstract: <b><i>Background:</i></b> Vitiligo is an acquired, multifactorial disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. An elevated homocysteine level has been described in vitiligo. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and cystathionine B synthase (CBS) are major determinants of the homocysteine metabolism. <b><i>Objectives:</i></b> Determine serum homocysteine levels in vitiligo patients as well as the association between <i>MTHFR</i> (C677T, A1298C) an… Show more

“…1). A final total of 5 case-control studies, which had recruited 1,703 patients with vitiligo and 1,708 controls, were included in the meta-analysis (3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Table I presents the basic characteristics of the included studies, all of which investigated the association between the MTHFR polymorphisms of C677T and A1298C and vitiligo susceptibility.…”

“…The studies were conducted in Asian, 5,9,13,15 Africa, 12 and Europe, 14 respectively. Among all the included studies, four studies evaluated the association between MTHFR rs1801131 and vitiligo susceptibility 5,9,12,13 . As for rs1801133 polymorphism, there were six studies evaluating the correlation of this polymorphism and vitiligo risk 5,9,12‐15 .…”

“…5,9,[12][13][14][15] Additionally, the MTHFR polymorphism (rs1801131, rs1801133) genotypic frequencies in all the subjects of control groups were consistent with HWE except 2 studies. 12,13 The NOS scores of included studies were ranged from 5 to 7, indicating the high quality of these studies. The characteristics of these studies are shown in Table 1.…”

“…CD4+ T cells and Th1 helper cells infiltrate these areas leading to increased circulation of autoantibodies against tyrosine hydroxylase, an anti-inflammatory enzyme. 13 Tahlawi et al 14 suggested that increased levels of homocysteine are associated with increased inflammation. The etiology is thus not fully known, particularly about the acrofacial and segmental variants.…”
