Estimation of Lead and Cadmium Levels in Muscles, Livers and Kidneys of Slaughtered Cattle in Mosul City

Abstract: Lead and cadmium levels were estimated in 225 samples of muscles, livers and kidneys of slaughtered cattle (75 samples of each). The samples were collected from butcher shops in Mosul City and they were analyzed for the presence of these heavy metals by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The mean concentrations of lead in muscles, livers and kidneys of slaughtered cattle were 0.071, 0.472 and 0.398 mg/kg, respectively. Of these muscle, liver and kidney samples, 2.67%, 17.33% and 12% of samples, respect… Show more

“…Moreover, in agreement with other studies (Al-naemi HS, 2011 ; Binkowski et al , 2016 ), the Cd concentration depended on the animal age, showing lower concentration in the younger buffaloes (<6 months) than in the older ones (groups B and C). This correlation was confirmed by the classes of homogeneity constructed that, although different in number, were optimal since the dispersion around the average was low within the groups ( Table 1 ).…”

“…The study coincided with (17) in the effect of the location on the level of copper concentration in calves in the industrial and rural areas of northern Spain which was recorded (3.35, 2.66 ppm) respectively. The results were consistent with (6), which showed that the concentration of lead in the liver of cows slaughtered in Mosul was higher than kidneys and muscles, (0.472, 0.398, 0.071 ppm) respectively. The results also consistent with (22) which found that the liver had the highest concentration of copper than kidney and the muscles were (36.88, 8.66, 4.14 ppm) respectively.…”
