“…The parameter T 1 was chosen as a representative measure for the wave periods because it is less susceptible to variations of energy in the high-frequency range of the spectra, if compared to the T z . Since this sort of variation is common in the VMB (due to the filtering of short waves), this procedure has been frequently adopted in the field (NIELSEN, 2008b;ISEKI, 2012;CHEN et al, 2020). Moreover, as is the case with T z , T 1 is an integral parameter, meaning that it still depends on the bulk energy estimated for the whole range of frequencies.…”

“…For instance, in relative terms, motion components like heave, roll, and pitch are typically less excited compared to structural hull girder responses such as bending and twisting, when the ship operates in short waves. In other words, the negative effects of a ship’s low-pass filtering characteristics can be diminished by introducing responses not affected by the low-pass behaviour to the same degree as motion components 10 , 19 , 25 . Consequently, designing or selecting the right measurements for improved estimation capabilities would be nice to have as a standard approach, thinking in the direction of a dynamical and automatic selection 53 , 54 .…”

“…However, for a large ship like a large container ship, the ship motions caused by high frequency waves are relatively small, while the hydro-elastic structural response becomes more significant. From this viewpoint, Chen et al (2018) proposed a new parametric method using the longitudinal hull girder bending stresses as one of the measured inputs, and showed that the wave spectrum could be predicted more accurately by this method. Chen et al (2021) further extended this method so that the multi-peaked directional wave spectrum could be estimated.…”
