Estimation of Regional Pulmonary Compliance in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Based on Personalized Lung Poromechanical Modeling

Abstract: Pulmonary function is tightly linked to the lung mechanical behavior, especially large deformation during breathing. Interstitial lung diseases, such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), have an impact on the pulmonary mechanics and consequently alter lung function. However, IPF remains poorly understood, poorly diagnosed and poorly treated. Currently, the mechanical impact of such diseases is assessed by pressure-volume curves, giving only global information. We developed a poromechanical model of the lung… Show more

“…There are multiple limitations to our current approach, at various levels. The formulation of the equilibrium gap principle introduced here only considers a single homogeneous domain, which might be limiting when tracking motion of highly heterogeneous structures such as diseases organs [8,48]. In such case, one might need to extend the formulation to multiple zones.…”

“…Further, constitutive parameters were set constant throughout the lung, an assumption that may not adequate to capture the variability observed in clinical conditions. To further personalized the proposed model, parameter values and their spatial distribution could be estimated from available clinical data and image information using inverse-analysis techniques ( Patte et al, 2022a ). Fourth, while our model has been validated by comparing global parameters such as respiratory compliance and resistance to values reported in the literature, regional values of strain and stress predicted by our simulations remain to be validated.…”

“…The collagen fibers in cephalopods contain interstitial tissue and a large distance between tissue cells, this characteristic appears in artificially cultured tissue and animals breathing through the skin or soft tissue. For instance, Octopus vulgaris traps the air taken by the animal through the skin to the skin tissue and then uses it for breathing process matching the higher terristerials animals (Grześkowiak, 2022;Nakano et al, 2022;Patte et al, 2022;Wang et al, 2022;Yin et al, 2022;Abd Elrheem, 2023). The interstitial area functions as similar as the lower lung, with lower content of dissolved oxygen which is adequate for survival, and this is common in kingdom Animalia such as hagfish (Smith et al, 2010;Birk et al, 2018;Eom et al, 2022).…”
