“…Previous reports have indicated that as with other osteoporotic bones, there are negative effects on implant treatment in the socket of an extracted tooth, including a decrease in the rate of bone formation, alveolar bone interdental bone thickness, and in the density and thickness of the mandibular inferior cortex (18)(19)(20).…”

“…Karayianni et al 13 found a correlation between mandibular cortical width (MCW) on dental panoramic radiographs and DXA T-scores. In another study, the coarseness of alveolar bone trabeculation was found to be an indicator of BMD in the forearm, 15 while another study found that the maxillary alveolar bone density was an indicator of bone density at all other sites, including the anteroposterior lumbar spine and lateral lumbar spine. 16 Therefore, dental panoramic radiographs could provide a convenient, affordable source of screening for osteoporosis with a lower radiation exposure for those patients who might not otherwise have access to conventional methods.…”

“…Visual assessment of the trabecular pattern in intra-oral radiographs is a method to identify women at risk of having osteoporosis. Dense trabeculation is a strong indicator of healthy bone, whereas sparse trabeculation is a sign of osteoporosis [18][19][20].…”
