“…In other flows than HIST ͑for decaying turbulence, evolving scalar fields and the atmospheric boundary layer͒, one found smaller values 1рC 0 (ϱ)р3. [5][6][7][8][9][10] The reasons for the obtained variation of C 0 (ϱ) estimates between 1 and 7 were not explained until now.…”

“…The Kolmogorov 1941 theory states that the inertial interval exists in the range 1/L κ 1/η ; these limits for our fields were different by only one order of magnitude. The value of the Kolmogorov constant is acceptable [11]-by inspection, it is just below 2. Frisch [2] comments in Section 6.3.2 that nonlinear interactions occur in scales below the Kolmogorov length scale and we note that our fields resolve this region (κ max η in Table 1); Yeung and Zhou [12] report κ max η ≈ 1.5 for a range of Reynolds numbers.…”

“…In evaluating Equation (7), we used the substitution u|Z = A(Z, t) , with A defined by Equation (11). It follows from the pdf equation (2) for homogeneous incompressible turbulence and Gaussian pdf that there is an analytical relationship between the Eulerian dispersion and scalar dissipation rate:…”

“…According to K41 universality hypotheses, the structure function should be isotropic and C 0 should have a universal value for all turbulent flows (at least in the limit of high Reynolds number). It is an important parameter in stochastic models of turbulent transport and dispersion (RODEAN, 1991;Sawford, 1991;Weinman and Klimenko, 2000) and is, remarkably, also connected to the structure functions of the fluctuations of a scalar field passively advected by the turbulence (Sawford, 2001). Previously measured values of C 0 range from 2.1 to 7.0, in part because Lagrangian experiments, where the trajectories of individual fluid particles are followed, have historically been very difficult.…”
