Estimation of the Surface Tension Components of Thiodiglycol

Abstract: The total surface tension of thiodiglycol was determined experimentally, and its surface tension components were estimated:  γLW = 42 ± 1 mJ m-2, γ+ = 1.1 ± 0.5 mJ m-2, and γ- = 25.0 ± 0.5 mJ m-2. The Lifshitz−van der Waals component was estimated from experimental values of thiodiglycol/n-alkane interfacial tensions, measured by the pendant drop method. The γ+ and γ- were estimated using the additional information of the contact angle of thiodiglycol on a solid substrate with known surface energy components. … Show more

“…The dynamic advancing contact angle is the angle ob- (35) served when the triple phase contact line (TPCL) is forced to advance on the dry solid surface. When this movement is stopped the TPCL is allowed to achieve an equilibrium configuration, and the contact angle observed at that time is denominated static advancing contact angle (SACA).…”

“…TDG (bp = 164−166 °C, mol wt = 122.19, and density = 1.182 g/cc) and DPHEAc (mp = 149−151 °C, mol wt = 228.25) were purchased from Sigma and were used as received. The Lifshitz-van der Waals component for TDG has been reported to be 42 ± 1 mJ m −2 . Long chain alkyl silane [C n H 2 n +1 Si (OCH 3 ) 3 , n = 11, mol wt = 286, bp = 118 °C] was provided by New Silicon Material Co., Ltd., in Wuhan University.…”

“…(1).This assumption is valid when both phases are non-polar and may be a good estimate when only one of them is polar. An alternative method to determine the surface tension components of a liquid is based on the knowledge of liquid-liquid interfacial tensions between that liquid and a series of test liquids showing a wide spectrum of polarities [8]. However, this method can not be applied in our case due to the high miscibility of ionic liquids with both polar and non-polar test liquids.…”
