Estimation of three-dimensional volumetric errors of machining centers by a tracking interferometer

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA tracking interferometer is a laser interferometer with the mechanism to steer the laser direction to automatically follow a target retroreflector. This paper experimentally investigates the performance of the tracking interferometer prototype, developed by a part of the authors, in estimating the volumetric accuracy of a machining center based on the multilateration principle. Then, the prototype's technical issues are discussed based on the measurement uncertainty analysis. This paper briefly… Show more

“…Otherwise, the equation set of the self-calibration in multilateration will have no solutions. Ibaraki et al 16 compared different sets of LT positions with respect to the multilateration uncertainty. Considering the optimization of the LT positions, Lin et al 17 calculated the optimal positions with Lagrange Multiplier method.…”

“…where J projected † is the pseudo-inverse of the projected Jacobian matrix. The calculated error coefficients, after the first iteration, are used to predict the projected error using Equation (6). The iteration is continued until convergence to a negligible error coefficients change threshold in the iterative loop.…”

“…So, describing and identifying those errors play an important role in ensuring the machine tool performance through compensation or mechanical adjustments and repairs. For that purpose, several testing instruments were proposed such as the telescopic magnetic ball-bar [2][3][4][5], laser tracker interferometer [6], R-test [7], and touch trigger probe [8,9]. The telescopic magnetic ball-bar test is widely used to capture the linear axes errors by running a circular test on the plane of two axes [3] and to estimate machine error parameters [10].…”

“…This representation is not minimal. The nominal geometric models for the calibration and error compensation of CMMs, CNC machine tools or other measuring devices were described in many papers [6,20,27,43,50,99,155,171] and different CIRP Keynotes [65,156]. These models will not be discussed here, but the general rules mentioned above can be applied to them, too.…”
