ESTRATEGIA Y DESARROLLO DE PROYECTOS DE INVESTIGACIÓN EN ARTE CONTEMPORANEO. Tres aportaciones desde el Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM)

Abstract

Starting from a historical approach to contemporary Art museums in Spain, this thesis defines the particularities and uniqueness of the model proposed by the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM); our research has been raised from the IVAM Restoration Department, to pose strategies and schemes based on the many variables that affect the physical realization of Contemporary Art works, as well as its "staging" in three specific projects:1. The documentation of especially complex artwork (Intallations), including the use of new technologies, degradable materials, obsolescence problems, or intangible content that need installation or maintenance instructions whenever the work is displayed.2. The application of laser technology to clean art works, as well as the development of an suitable prototype for installations at Contemporary Art museums.3. The investigation of an early 20 th Century piece of art made of plastic, which has evolved towards its irreversible deterioration. We propose the study and implementation of a replica with new plastic materials to ensure its durability, by the use of technology and systems to generate 3D images.These projects define the issues presented by Contemporary Art, as its conservation is nowadays a field in its experimental stages, and thus it requires priority to be linked to SUMMARY Tesis Doctoral: Estrategia y Desarrollo de Proyectos de Investigación en Arte Contemporáneo | 10 research projects -related to characteristic materials from the 20 th and 21 st Centuries-, as well as new documentation technologies and innovative methods of Art works processing are required.
