“…Estrogens and their receptors in the medial AMY rapidly facilitate social recognition in female mice (Lymer et al . ). A recent study in the AMY of the guinea pig reported that in various nuclei of the AMY, small subsets of CB neurons and substantial proportions of PV neurons co‐express ERβ, whereas many of the CR neurons co‐express ERα.…”

“…Our previous studies noted that ERa rescue is effective in improving the hippocampal-dependent cognition deficit after long-term ovariectomy (Qu et al 2013(Qu et al , 2016. “…The most studied ERs are ERα, ERβ and the G protein coupled ER 1 (GPER1) which can mediate both rapid non‐genomic and the more delayed and lasting classical genomic effects . ERα and GPER1 have been shown to rapidly facilitate social recognition and social learning with the effects of ERβ being less well defined . Estrogenic mechanism and ERα and ERβ have been implicated in the expression of disgust and pathogen/toxin avoidance.…”

“…All three ER receptors are expressed in the medial amygdala where they enhance social recognition and likely are associated with the functioning of the OTR . Estrogens in the paraventricular nucleus rapidly facilitate social recognition, an effect that was blocked by OTR antagonists in the amygdala (, in preparation), while estrogens in medial preoptic area of female mice have been associated with the rewarding effects of male odors facilitating dopamine release at the level of the ventral tegmental area . It is possible that such interactive mechanism may be associated with the expression of pathogen and toxin disgust associated with ERs.…”
