Show more

“…However, in the present study, the size at sexual maturity was similar to the average size of capture, which could indicate that S. peruviana is currently at the limit of its optimal size of capture. In the future, this could result in instability with regard to the recruitment of new individuals to the population (Ochoa-Ubilla et al 2016).…”

“…AdM is located at the center of the Guayas River basin in the lowlands-coastal area of Western Ecuador and is a river-wetland system that experiences marked predictable seasonality. During the wet season (January-April), the system floods and expands before decreasing dramatically in the dry season, with water remaining only in the main channels (Alvarez-Mieles, 2019).The wetland was declared a Ramsar site in March 2000 and is a valuable site for freshwater fishes, supporting at least 22 species, including commercially important species (Alvarez-Mieles, 2019;OchoaUbilla et al, 2016;Ramsar, ). Macrophytes, which provide shelter from predators, food, and spawning and nursery grounds(Agostinho et al, 2007;Alvarez-Mieles, 2019;Meerhoff et al, 2007;Meschiatti et al, 2000), are abundant at AdM, with the floating macrophyte Eichornia crassipes (Pontederiaceae), commonly known as 'water hyacinth', representing around 80% of the total macrophytes biomass in the wetland, and Salvinia auriculataAubl.…”
