Estuaries and Coasts as an Outlet for Research in Coastal Ecosystems: A Bibliometric Study

Abstract: Recent changes in the editorial leadership, name, content, and publishing process for Estuaries and Coasts and looming changes in scientific publishing as technology advances have provided an opportunity to assess the health and examine the growth in size and reputation of the journal. Estuaries and Coasts has grown in size by about fourfold, with a concurrent decline in acceptance rate of about 1.5% per year to reach the present 65% acceptance rate.

“…In the broader field of marine science, using scientometric data has been employed in subfields such as fisheries science [30], marine microplastics [31], sea turtle research [32], estuaries and coasts [33], and marine biodiversity research [34]. Many of these studies include author network analyses, which have been supported by more local and qualitative analyses of scientific collaboration in specific regions, universities or departments [35][36][37].…”

“…One common approach to bibliometric research is to use the Science Citation Index (SCI) that traces publications of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). The SCI by the bibliometric analysis has been widely used to investigate topics in many fields, such as medical topics (Chiu et al 2004;Li et al 2009) and science and engineering fields (Huang et al 2008;Xie et al 2008), additionally Fourqurean et al use a bibliometric method to evaluate the health of 'Estuaries and Coasts' and examine its growth in size and reputation during the process of changing its name (Fourqurean et al 2008).…”

“…Araújo & Shideler (2011) examined 4 303 papers and notes published between 1951 and 2010 in the journal Bulletin of Marine Science to trace the history and status of the journal. Fourqurean, Duarte, Kershaw, & Threlkeld (2008) used also a bibliometric approach to analyze scientific contributions published in the journal Estuaries and Coasts. Wulff (2008) revised the databases of Web of Knowledge (WOK) and Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) to evaluate publications in marine botany.…”
