The area evaluated in this study was a continuous stretch comprising three vegetation formations: gallery forest, semideciduous seasonal forest and cerradão (woodland savanna). The aim of this study was to examine the tree community dynamics in a forest gradient-from gallery forest to cerradão-at Panga Ecological Station, in the city of Uberlandia, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study was based on data from a previous inventory of the continuous forest conducted in 211 permanent 10 × 10 m sample plots in eight parallel transect running perpendicular to Panga Creek. Trees with a diameter at breast height ≥ 4.77 cm were sampled in 1997, 2002 and 2007. With the exception of the cerradão, there was a net reduction in tree density over the studied period of ten years, because mortality rates were higher than the recruitment rates. The basal area increased during the period of the study, especially at cerradão. The mean mortality rate in the studied area was 2.64%.yr , respectively. In general, mortality rates and recruitment rates have increased during the two successive periods of measurement and showed an imbalance in favor of mortality for the semideciduous seasonal forest and the gallery forest. This fact, added to the low density and high basal area, suggest that there was a process of thinning in the tree community. However, at cerradão, there was an imbalance in favor of recruitment, with a consequent increase in density and basal area, indicating that the cerradão is in a construction phase, which was further favored by a decrease in the occurrence of fire and other anthropogenic disturbances. When the turnover rates are taken into consideration, the global dynamics of the study area over the ten years evaluated can be expressed as cerradão > semideciduous seasonal forest > gallery forest.

We evaluated the floristic and structural composition of a tree community in an ecotone between Cerrado (cerradão) and Atlantic Forest (seasonal semideciduous forest) domains located in Porto Ferreira State Park (PFSP), southeastern Brazil. We compared the floristic relationships of this ecotone with those of previous surveys carried out on the same vegetation types and checked the species distribution among the Brazilian biomes. We sampled all living trees with PBH>10 cm in 64 10x10 m plots (0.64 ha), totaling 1,755 individuals belonging to 101 species and 37 families. The richest families were Myrtaceae (13 spp.) and Fabaceae (11 spp.), and Siparuna guianensis was the most abundant species (188 individuals). We reported two threatened species. A great number of species are widely distributed, occurring in different Brazilian biomes. Floristic similarity values were low among the selected studies, but our sampled community clustered with communities of cerradão and ecotone areas of previous surveys. Our results corroborate that ecotonal areas have great tree diversity and the predominance of widely distributed species. This fact, combined with the vegetation thickening verified through historical photographs, reinforces that the study area belongs to an under-changing ecotone.

A vegetação remanescente do Estado de São Paulo é fragmentada e tem sofrido com o processo acelerado de devastação, assim a manutenção de fragmentos florestais é essencial para conservação da biodiversidade. Por essa razão, o objetivo desse trabalho foi compreender a dinâmica da vegetação, por meio do mapeamento e análise dos fragmentos florestais que compõem a Guarnição da Aeronáutica de Pirassununga (SP, Brasil), localizada às margens do Rio Mogi Guaçu. Os fragmentos florestais presentes na Guarnição são essenciais para conservação da biodiversidade, uma vez que constituem ecótonos com distintas formações vegetais. A classificação e obtenção da métrica do componente arbóreo deu-se por visitas a campo e pela utilização do software livre QGIS 2.18, através do qual também foi possível realizar o exame das imagens do satélite Landsat 8, e o cálculo dos índices de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI) e de forma (SI). A partir desse estudo identificou-se aproximadamente 2000 hectares de vegetação nativa, considerando formações como Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (FES) associada à Floresta Ciliar, Cerrado e Cerradão, e áreas de transição, além dos 252 hectares de várzea e 356 hectares de silvicultura. Dos municípios pertencentes à Unidade de Gerenciamento de Recursos Hídricos da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Mogi Guaçu, Pirassununga detém fragmentos de FES e Cerradão, com área superior a 200 hectares, sendo este ainda não contabilizado na literatura. E pela utilização do NDVI pode-se constatar que no verão a vegetação apresentou-se mais densa e que no inverno há a redução desses valores devido à diminuição da biomassa foliar.
