Ethanol extract of Cassia sieberiana leaves ameliorates deviances associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia in rats

Abstract: This study investigates the curative response of ethanol extract of Cassia sieberiana leaves (EECSL) on testosterone-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Thirty rats of 11-12 weeks old weighing 120-160 g were grouped into six of five rats each. Group 1 was the normal control; groups 2-6 were induced with testosterone (5 mg/kg body weight) for 21 days following standard procedures. Group 2 serves as BPH-control, groups 3 received finasteride while 4-6 received orally 100, 300, and 500 mg/kg of EECSL, res… Show more

“…Administration of M. arboreus extracts and finasteride for 28 days resulted in a decrease in prostate PSA levels compared to the negative control group. According to some authors, the reduction of PSA levels by substances or treatments is an indication of their inhibitory activity of 5a-reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from testosterone, and of the effectiveness in the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia [43,79].…”

“…Ethanol is widely used as an industrial solvent, a renewable energy source, and a building block chemical for fuels and chemicals. In medicine, ethanol acts as an antidote for the overdoses of methanol and ethylene glycol (Strohm, 2014), an activating agent for granular aerogel adsorbent to remove the organic pollutant in hospital wastewater (Prasanna et al, 2020), a chemical treatment for re-used N95 respirators and surgical masks (Grinshpun et al, 2020), and chemical treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) (Cheung et al, 2018), and testosterone-induced BPH (Ekeyi et al, 2021).…”
