Ethephon and Silver Thiosulfate Affect Postharvest Characteristics of Rosa hybrida `Victory Parade'

Abstract: The postharvest quality of miniature pot roses is limited by bud abscission and premature flower senescence. Rosa hybrida `Victory Parade' plants were treated with ethephon to study their sensitivity to ethylene and with silver thiosulfate (STS) to investigate its inhibitory effects on ethylene action. Bud abscission and flower senescence were promoted by spraying plants with ethephon, and the longevity of individual flowers and whole plants … Show more

“…Sytsema (1986) reported that a combination of BA and STS prolonged flower longevity and improved flower development and bud opening of cut Freesia. STS and BA have been reported to prolong the longevity of potted Rosa hybrida 'Victory Parade' when each was applied alone (Serek, 1993;Serek and Andersen, 1993). However, we were unable to find reports on cytokinin and STS combination treatments for extending potted rose longevity.…”

“…STS increased floral longevity on 'Meijikatar' and 'Meirutral' plants and improved flower opening on 'Meijikatar' plants. Serek (1993) showed that potted roses are sensitive to ethylene and that STS increased flower longevity by preventing abscission. However, flower longevity decreased and abscission increased on 'Victory Parade' plants as the STS concentration increased from 0.4 to 1.6 mM (Serek, 1993).…”

“…A longevidade das flores é resultante de vários fatores pré e pós-colheita e está relacionada com características genéticas, fisiológicas e anatômicas de cada espécie e entre cultivares (MORAES et al, 1999). O armazenamento de flores visa basicamente minimizar os problemas de conservação, transporte e distribuição, com o objetivo de reduzir o processo de senescência, aumentando a longevidade (SEREK, 1993).…”

“…Consequently, extensive efforts have been made to improve the quality and increase the production of these plants in Denmark (Serek and Anderson 1993). However, loss of quality during postharvest and marketing in miniature potted roses is still an important problem which is mainly caused by ethylene (Serek 1993;Serek et al 1994). Ethylene reduces the postharvest quality by accelerating flower senescence as well as bud, flower and leaf drop and increases incidences of grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) infection.…”

“…Sensitivity to ethylene plays an important role during transport and handling of potted roses in supermarkets and other areas where the air is commonly contaminated with ethylene (Mu¨ller et al 1998(Mu¨ller et al , 2000a. The need for chemical protection from ethylene action has been recommended in many potted flowering plants in which low concentrations of ethylene causes rapid loss in display quality (Serek 1993;Serek et al 1994). Recently, a range of cyclopropenes (CPs) have been developed, which are effective in preventing the deleterious effects of ethylene in plants .…”
