Ethical and social aspects of neural prosthetics

Abstract: Neural prosthetics are devices or systems that bypass, modulate, supplement, or replace regions of the brain and its connections to the body that are damaged and dysfunctional from congenital abnormalities, brain and spinal cord injuries, limb loss, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Some prosthetics are implanted in the brain. Others consist of implants and systems outside the brain to which they are connected. Still others are completely external to the brain. But they all send inputs to and receive outputs fro… Show more

“…Currently, prosthetics significantly improve the life quality of amputees, while it still lacks the ability to sense hazards and injuries. [225,226] For example, a prosthetic hand cannot be sensed when placed on a hot surface, and there is hardly any feeling when approaching sharp objects. Therefore, the development of a human-like pain-sensing and responsive intelligent prosthesis is a key step toward the "smart prosthetics" with sophisticated feedback systems.…”

“…Furthermore, it is certain that in the coming years applications will be available that will allow instant access to information in ways that do not require conscious search on the part of the user but will be related to their actions or even their thoughts. We are also moving steadily toward the implementation of technologies that revolve around and within our brains and our bodies, as evidenced by the development of various devices and systems, such as neuroprosthetics (for a discussion on the different types of neural prosthetics and their ethical aspects see Glannon, 2022).…”
