Ethnic Identity, Drinking Motives, and Alcohol Consequences Among Alaska Native and Non-Native College Students

Abstract: This research involves the examination of drinking motives, alcohol consequences, and ethnic identity in a sample of Native and non-Native college student drinkers in Alaska. “…Although few studies have focused on AI/AN college students, in a survey conducted in Alaska, AI/AN students reported greater alcohol-related consequences than non-AI/ANs (Skewes & Blume, 2015). This is particularly concerning as college students have markedly high rates of heavy drinking, serious alcohol consequences, and alcohol use disorders (Courtney & Polich, 2009; Hingson, Zha, & Weitzman, 2009; Hingson & White, 2014).…”

“…Also, drinking to cope may confer additional risk above and beyond the effects of consumption. Coping motives for alcohol use have been shown to predict alcohol consequences even when controlling for consumption (Skewes & Blume, 2015) and should be addressed in efforts to mitigate both problematic drinking and college sexual assault.…”
