Objectives The aim of this study was to review and highlight traditional and ethnobotanical uses, phytochemical constituents, IP status, biological activity and pharmacological activity of Viscum articulatum. Methods Thorough literature searches were performed on Viscum articulatum, and data were analysed for reported traditional uses, pharmacological activity, phytochemicals present and patents filed. Scientific and patent databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Google patents, USPTO and Espacenet were searched using different keywords. Key findings Viscum articulatum has been traditionally used in different parts of the world for treatment of various ailments. Almost all the parts such as leaves, root, stem and bark are having medicinal values and are reported for their uses in Ayurvedic and Chinese system of medicine for the management of various diseases. Modern scientific studies demonstrate efficacy of this plant against hypertension, ulcer, epilepsy, inflammation, wound, nephrotoxicity, HIV, cancer, etc. Major bioactive phytochemicals include oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, eriodictyol, naringenin, b-amyrin acetate, visartisides, etc. Conclusions Side effects of allopathic medicines have created a global opportunity, acceptance and demand for phytomedicines. Viscum articulatum could be an excellent source of effective and safe phytomedicine for various ailments if focused translational efforts are undertaken by integrating the existing outcomes of researches.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine essential and non-essential heavy metal contents as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), arsenic (As), aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu), from marketed medicinal herbs of UAE and to investigate whether or not they pose a risk of heavy metal toxicity in regards to World Health Organization (WHO) and national limits.Nine samples of medicinal herbs as Linn., Materials and methods:Artemisia absinthium Adhatoda vasica Melissa parviflora Achillea millefolium Bacopa monnieri Gymnema sylvestre Nees., Benth., , , , Onosma bracteatum, Corchorus depressus Viola odorata Linn. and were collected from local herbal stores of UAE and sample solution was prepared by a dry ashing digestion procedure used for the quantification of Al, Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni and Fe. For As determination, the samples were prepared by wet digestion procedure. Calibration curves were prepared using different concentration ranges for the metals and the solutions were analyzed either by Graphite Furnace or Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Method validation was performed by evaluating metal recovery studies . Results: The mean recoveries were from 82.20 to 98.92%. The studied samples all exhibited a positive response for eight essential and non-essential heavy metals, and contained about 1.01-3.63 µg Pb, 0.126-0.849 µg As, 0.46-1.48 µg Ni, 0.073-0.591 µg Cd, µg Fe respectively. The results were compared with the established WHO and national permissible limits set for heavy metals in medicinal plants and found within limits.The studied nine medicinal herbs contained tolerable levels of essential Conclusion: and non-essential heavy metals, and were safe to consume and further processing.

Ethnomedicinal Potential of Sarcostemma Acidum in Different Regions in India

Objective: The aim of this study is to collect and enumerate the uses of Sarcostemma acidum (Somlata) in the treatments of various diseases and to evaluate knowledgeable information on traditional practitioners among different communities in India. Methods:This was an extensive survey of literature on ethnopharmacological uses of S. acidum in Indian system of traditional medicine (TM), and the collected information documented in tabular form. Results:The collected literature reveals that the plant is used as TM by the indigenous community in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttaranchal, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These communities are using the whole plant in 29%, stem 15%, latex 24%, roots 10%, leaves 17%, and flowers in 5% of cases for treating 40 different types of ailments important being ear ache, snake bite, rheumatism, dog bite, emetic, chronic ulcer, and bone fracture. Conclusions:Due to insufficient knowledge, lack of information and overexploitation has made the plant species under threat. The present survey provides proper documentation of ethnomedicinal uses of the plant and provides a valuable source of information for traditional practitioners and researchers with a special emphasis on developing policies for conservation and sustainable use of this species.
