Ethylene, Simulated Shipping, STS, and AOA Affect Corolla Abscission of New Guinea Impatiens

Abstract: Exposure to exogenous ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) caused corolla abscission of NewGuinea impatiens (Impatiens × hawkeri 'Sunfire'). Abscission varied with time of exposure and C 2 H 4 concentration. Ethylene at ≥ ≥ 1 µl·liter -1 and exposure times of 4 or more hours caused 80% to 100% corolla abscission. Simulated shipping of untreated control plants caused ≈ ≈ 65% corolla abscission. Plants pretreated with silver thiosulfate (STS) and (aminooxy)acetic acid (AOA) and subsequently exposed to simulated shipping were not… Show more

“…Plants showed 50%, 98%, and 100% flower abscission after overnight exposure to 0.25, 0.75, and 1 mL · L -1 , ethylene respectively. This is similar to Dostal et al (1991) who found that a 6-h treatment with 1 mL · L -1 ethylene caused 100% flower abscission in Impatiens ·hawkeri. Therefore, our further experiments were conducted using 1 mL · L -1 exogenous ethylene overnight in darkness.…”

“…Impatiens plants are highly sensitive to ethylene and show rapid flower abscission (overnight) when exposed to very low concentrations of ethylene (Dostal et al, 1991). Both Impatiens ·hawkeri (Dostal et al, 1991;Han, 2003) and I. walleriana can benefit from 1-MCP protection to improve postharvest quality (Han, 2003;Skog, 2001). Impatiens, therefore, can serve as an excellent model plant to investigate the use and efficacy of this novel 1-MCP formulation on floral crops.…”

“…AOA inhibits endogenous ethylene biosynthesis in plants by inhibiting the action of ACC synthase (Yu et al, 1979). In tests with this compound on flowering potted Impatiens, Dostal et al (1991) showed that AOA inhibited corolla abscission by 20%. BA, a growth regulator, may retard leaf and floral organ senescence (Halevy and Kofranek, 1976).…”

“…tested. Ethylene and jasmonic acid are known signal molecules for disease defense and abscission in plants (Dostal et al, 1991;Estornell et al, 2013;González-Carranza et al, 1998;Sequeira, 1973;Sexton, 1976;Wilson et al, 1987), and it may be beneficial to further study the role that plant hormones may play in the resistance response between Impatiens spp. and S. sclerotiorum.…”
