Etiologic heterogeneity of clear‐cell and papillary renal cell carcinoma in the Netherlands Cohort Study

Abstract: At present, mostly case-control and retrospective studies have investigated the association between etiologic risk factors and the development of histologic subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Therefore, we assessed the heterogeneity between body mass index (BMI), cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and hypertension across clear-cell RCC (ccRCC) and papillary RCC (pRCC) risk in the prospective Netherlands Cohort Study on diet and cancer. In 1986, 120 852 participants aged 55 to 69 completed a self-admin… Show more

“…Several potential studies have suggested that the consumption of alcohol in small to moderate amounts has a dose-dependent protective impact on the progression of RCC. ( Lew et al, 2011 ; Minami et al, 2021 ; van de Pol et al, 2021 ). Typically, the intake of a minimum of 15 g of alcohol daily is linked to a lower chance of RCC, with an estimated reduction of 28%.…”

“…Clinical data were collected using the hospital information system (HIS) (DHC Software Co, China), including sex, age, smoking history, kidney stone history, flank pain, and hematuria. Patients with a smoking history for more than 20 years and no less than 20 cigarettes per day were identified as having a smoking history [ 23 ]. Patients with kidney stones for more than five years were considered to have a positive nephrolith history [ 25 ], and cases with small asymptomatic calculi were not considered positive.…”

“…Zhu and Ding et al only described the clinical and CT features of RUC without comparing RUC and RCC [18,19]. Clinical characteristics have yielded reference value for diagnosis, such as smoking history, presence of nephrolith, hematuria, and ank pain [20][21][22][23][24][25].…”
