Etiology of chronic urticaria: the Ecuadorian experience

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to identify chronic urticaria (CU) etiologies and treatment modalities in Ecuador. We propose that the sample distribution fits the expected one, and that there is an association between the etiology and its treatment.MethodsWe performed a retrospective study involving 112 patients diagnosed with CU using a Checklist for a complete chronic urticaria medical history. Demographic and clinical variables were collected. The etiology of CU was classified using the EAACI/GA2LE… Show more

“…Our population with 3 out of 4 female patients below 40 years old is not different from previous reports on the topic, and even from predominant age and sex in a smaller Ecuadorian sample 9 . Surprisingly, coincidentally with this comparison, the median time of evolution of urticaria by the time of assessment in our registry was also above 16 weeks.…”

“…Type 2 immune responses to allergen exposure play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma, which is initiated by epithelium-derived cytokines including IL-33, IL-25 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) [ 27 29 ]. We investigated how HDM and SRT1720 affect IL-33 release from BEAS-2B cells.…”

“…Therefore, working day losses were not recorded in non-hospitalized unemployed patients, even if productivity impairments were unavoidable in case of frequent exacerbations. Since female prevalence was greater than that observed in real-life 31 , gender distribution was highly unbalanced in our study, and it is well known that the employment rate is lower for women in comparison to men. Hence, it is very likely that a more balanced population could have allowed to verify greater savings with regard to the cost due to productivity loss.…”
