ETS-RSP Particulate Marker Factors: Variation in Published Factors and Application to ETS Data from Two Types of Indoor Environments

Abstract: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is an indoor air pollutant that causes adverse health effects for exposed non-smokers. To measure the ETS concentration particulate tobacco smoke components are identified and are referred to as ETS markers named ultraviolet particulate matter (UVPM), fluorescent particulate matter and solanesol particulate matter. To determine the contribution of ETS to indoor air pollution empirically derived ETS marker factors are applied. The factors represent a ratio of ETS marker to tota… Show more

“…Respirable suspended particles, measured as particulate matter with a 50% cutoff point at 2.5 mm, were actively sampled with a portable sampling pump and an impactor sample head. 28 Tobacco-specific particles. Ultraviolet particulate matter, fluorescent particulate matter, and Solanesol particulate matter (SolPM) were analyzed as previously reported.…”

“…The UVPM and FPM standards were 2,2Ј,4,4Ј-tetrahydroxybenzophenone (2,2Ј,4,4Ј-THBP, 97% pure, Sigma-Aldrich, UK) and scopoletin (95% pure, Sigma-Aldrich, UK) in HPLC grade methanol respectively [9]. The ETS-RSP factors derived by Phillips et al [10] were chosen for ETS-UVPM and ETS-FPM apportionment in the original RSP sample [11].…”

“…Methanol mobile phase, flow rate 2 mL·min Ϫ1 , column temperature 40°C, UV detection at 210 nm [8]. The SolPM ETS-RSP factor derived by Phillips et al [10] was used to apportion ETS-SolPM to the RSP sample [11]. The SolPM standard was solanesol (HPLC grade 95ϩ % pure, Sigma-Aldrich, UK) in HPLC grade methanol.…”
