Results are presented on 3 Amerindian populations of interior French Guiana: the Emerillon, the Wayampi and the Wayana. Blood specimens were examined for the red cell antigens A, A₁ B, H, M, N, S, s, P₁, C, D, E, c, e, C, K, k, Kp^a, Kp^b, Js^b, Le^a, Le^b, Le^x, Fy^a, Fy^b, Jk^a, Di^a, I, Xg^a. The frequencies found are within the range of those previously reported in other Amerindian populations, except for the Diego system, where the Dia gene frequencies are among the highest observed.

A total of 136 individuals were studied in relation to 31 genetic systems, and the results were compared with South American Indian averages and previous surveys on the Wayana of French Guiana and Surinam. The information was afterwards integrated with data from other Carib groups, and two types of genetic distances (Nei's and Edwards') were calculated a) between five groups, considering ten systems; and b) between nine groups, using five systems. The two measures of genetic distances correlated well (Spearman's correlation coefficient around 0.70), and there was good agreement between the geographical and genetic distances. All analyses indicated a peripheral position for the Apalai-Wayana and their distinctiveness from the Wayana of French Guiana and Surinam, suggesting that intertribal fusions may play an important role in the genetic differentiation of these populations.

Summary.We have studied 506 Amerindians from three French Guiana groups: 194 Wayampi, living in Trois-Sauts, and 100 in the Camopi area; 47 Emerillon also living in the Camopi area and 165 Wayana on the Litani and Maroni rivers. All samples were tested for Glm(1,2,3,17), G3m(5,6,10,11,13,14,15,16,21,24,28) and Km(1) by the classical method of hemaglutination inhibition. The phenotype and haplotype distributions are presented and have been subjected to factorial correspondence analysis. Two Gm haplotypes are common: Gm1*37;21,28, and Gm1,2,17;21,28, but with an important variation in frequency. A rare haplotype, probably the result of a genetic anomaly: Gm1,17;21R>28, is frequent in the Emerillon (17%). These populations show no evidence of Black or Caucasian admixtures.
