Show more

“…These are also present on one flagellum only but in a single row, unlike almost all stramenopile flagellates. Simple nontubular mastigonemes are documented in some deep‐branching alveolates such as those on the posterior flagellum of Chromera velia (Weatherby et al, 2011) and Colponema vietnamica (Tikhonenkov et al, 2014), while in Colponema loxodes they are on the proximal portion of the anterior flagellum (Mignot & Brugerolle, 1975). Simple nontubular mastigonemes are also present in some members of Provora (Janouškovec et al, 2017; Tikhonenkov, Mikhailov, et al, 2022).…”

“…Small binucleate pro-trophonts grow into trophonts; repeated divisions of these give rise to a series of tomonts both binucleate and mononucleate and finally to cysts, usually mononucleate, comparable to those which in Opalina are called "Infection cysts" by Wessenberg (1961) or "Gamontokystes" by Mignot & Brugerolle (1974). They reveal also the danger of creating new species on the basis of limited collections made at a single time and place, as has been the general practice in the past.…”

“…Parvilucifera species, like many other parasitic genera belonging to the alveolates, such as Colpodella, Rastrimonas, and Perkinsus, possess features of dinoflagellates and apicomplexans, the other two main groups of this superphylum. Therefore, phylogenetically, these parasitic lineages do not fit neatly within either group, which, in terms of their life cycle, raises several interesting evolutionary questions (Brugerolle 2002b(Brugerolle , 2003Mignot and Brugerolle 1975;Moore et al 2008;Perkins 1976Perkins , 1996Siddall et al 1997;Siddall et al 2001). In the following, we examine the features of the Parvilucifera life cycle with respect to those of the above-mentioned parasitic genera and the dinoflagellate and apicomplexan parasites Amoebophrya and Plasmodinium, respectively.…”
