“…Managers were coded as generalists if they had a degree in management, such as an MPA, MBA, or similar. We found generalist managers in a variety of contexts, for example, MBAs leading hospitals (McCrea & Teodoro, 2018), leading central banks (Ozili, 2020), in management positions in local governance (Anessi‐Pessina & Sicilia, 2019; Clémenceau & Soguel, 2017), in central administration (Afonso & Guedes, 2014), and in U.S. acquisition of military equipment (Eckerd & Snider, 2017). Managers were coded as specialists if they had an education uniquely relevant and specialized to their contexts, such as hospital directors with an MD (Veronesi et al, 2013), school principals with a degree in education (Pierson, 2014), central bank governors with a PhD in economics (Ozili, 2020), and water utility executives with an engineering degree (Teodoro, 2014).…”
