Soil salinization is a global and climatic phenomenon that affects various spheres of life. The present rate of salinization is perilously fast because of global climate change and associated events leading to enhanced land degradation, loss of soil fertility and crop productivity. In this chapter, we tried to focus on the arid and semiarid regions of India along with our coastal zone which are economically fragile regions and need much closer attention. In future, India will face extreme pressure on its land resources in agriculture because of likely rapid degradation of these resources. Thus, salt affected soils must be brought under cultivation by adopting site specific strategies to ensure national food and nutritional security. In this regard, a comprehensive review of the major halophytes of these ecological zones, its mechanism of salt tolerance, ecological and economic potential is done. The potential applications of saline land vegetation including halophytes in climate change mitigation, phytoremediation, desalination, food, secondary metabolite and nutraceutical production, medicine, and saline agriculture have been discussed. Further, we tried to focus on popular farmer adopted halophytic species including edible ones, their uses, products of economic significance etc. which is highly imperative for effective utilization of these saline soils leading to improved livelihood and sustenance of resource poor farmers along with improved ecological balance.

“…In waterlogged saline soil, the performance of E.tereticornis grown along with wheat -rice rotation for 6 years in paired strip row planting method was evaluated. During the 6 th year tree population planted at 1m X 1m spacing (300 trees ha -1 ) performed well and yielded 33.5 t ha -1 timber dry wood, sequestered 15.2 Mg C ha -1 , transpired at a rate of 68.0 L day -1 and discharged 745 mm year -1 water from soil, ultimately lowering water table upto 43 cm (Dagar et al, 2016). Major parts of agricultural lands in arid and semi-arid regions of India are affected by soil salinity and waterlogging in canal command area and outside. Waterlogging is caused by a rising water table and poor drainage conditions. Stress due to waterlogging and salinity are serious to plants in all stages from seed germination to active growth and maturity. Unmanaged affected agricultural lands turn into low productive marshlands in the long run. Physical provision of surface or sub-surface drainage structures can rescue in such a situation. Yet, high skill and investment are required in the installation and maintenance of such structures. Alternatively, biodrainage method has been evolved as an effective method recently world over. In biodrainage, plants are raised over a larger area, which can transpire and remove an enormous amount of water from the soil. Plants having adequate adaptive traits and tolerance mechanisms are desirable to mitigate waterlogging and salinity. Biodrainage is suitable in rainfed and irrigated conditions. Planting of right plant species in optimum population and geometry decides the efficiency of biodrainage. Further, combining biodrainage with the conventional drainage can improve land and water productivity. Eucalyptus is the most suitable tree species for biodrainage as it has well performed in versatile environments. It possesses appreciable tolerance to salinity, sodicity and waterlogged conditions of the soil. Fast-growing with a straight trunk, deep rooting ability, low shading effect and high transpiration capacity are promising characteristics of this tree. Prominent woody species like Acacia nilotica, Dalbergia sissoo, Hardwickia binata can also be grown for high profit.

“…The question of what should be the optimum spacing of Eucalyptus for strip plantation in agroforestry to achieve maximum benefits in terms of groundwater table drawdown, wood production and crop yields was still unanswered. Therefore, the above study was continued in the same area by taking strip plantations of clonal Eucalyptus tereticornis in paired rows at spacings of 1 × 1 m, 1× 2 m and 1 × 3 m on farm acre boundaries (called killa‐lines), spacing resulting in tree populations of 300, 150 and 100 trees ha ‐1 (Dagar et al ). Considering wood biomass production, lowering of the groundwater table, carbon sequestration and crop productivity, the agroforestry biodrainage model of 6‐year rotation having strip plantations of Eucalyptus in paired rows on farm acre line in spacing of 1 × 1 m was found to be better compared to 1 × 2 m and 1 × 3 m in waterlogged areas of north‐west India.…”

Waterlogging and its associated soil salinity are a major impediment to the sustainability of irrigated agriculture. Although conventional engineering drainage technologies such as subsurface or vertical drainage combat the problem, they are costly and generate huge quantities of effluent which is difficult to dispose of. Biodrainage, which removes excess soil water by deep‐rooted fast‐growing trees through evapotranspiration using bioenergy, is an appropriate alternative. Plant consumptive water use varies between 6500 and 28 000 m3 ha‐1 yr‐1 and an ideal tree plantation lowers groundwater tables by 1–2 m over a time period of 3–5 years. Trees such as Eucalyptus, Populus, Casuarina, Dalbergia, Syzigium, Acacia, Prosopis, Leucaena, etc. are found to be effective in lowering shallow groundwater tables and reversing salinity trends. Integration of trees such as Eucalyptus and Populus along with crops in a unified agroforestry system, on approach roads, field bunds or on dykes of ponds in an integrated farming system, is another viable proposition. Irrigation of highly transpiring trees has also been proposed for reuse of wastewater and conservation of nutrient energy into biomass, leading to carbon sequestration, environmental sanitation and eco‐restoration. For effective understanding and implementation, several case studies on the role of biodrainage for managing waterlogging and salinity are discussed in this paper.
