Eulerian Multiphase Population Balance Model of Atomizing, Swirling Flows

Abstract: An Eulerian/Eulerian multiphase flow model coupled with a population balance model is used as the basis for numerical simulation of atomization in swirling flows. The objective of this exercise is to develop a methodology capable of predicting the local point-wise drop size distribution in a spray, such as would be measured by the Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDA). Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements of particle size distributions in an airblast atomizer spray to demonstrate good qu… Show more

“…However, these methods are computationally not tractable on real systems. For example, a typical implementation of the inhomogenous MUSIG model requires about 3 to 4 weeks run time per simulation on a typical 3GHz workstation [95]. Industrially relevant configurations are even more challenging.…”

“…Specialized kernels are therefore required for spray PBE applications. Application of PBE to sprays is in its infancy [95] and requires more attention before confidence can be gained in the kernel functions being proposed.…”

“…The air-blast spray data were obtained from a swirling axisymmetric free jet spraying calibration fluid MIL-PRF-7024 type 2. Details of the experimental set-up and atomizer configuration are available in Rayapati et al (2011). The pressure swirl spray data were obtained using water as a working fluid and have been reported by Dhivyaraja et al (2019).…”
