This audience, as recipients of the EU's script, have not been examined as rigorously as is required, to date. This article examines how the EU seeks to have an international impact in its promotion of reg… Show more

“…This equivalence validates the pertinence and intrinsic value of Q4. Such an approach also has the potential to be applied to studying the common norms structuring ASEAN’s relations with China, Japan, and the European Union (see for example, Le Thu, 2019; Ying & Chan, 2021; Satake, 2019; Murray, 2015), so as to better understand their shared identity- and value-based foundations. “…Now, I turn to the issue of how ASEAN views European integration. There are studies that examine the subjective aspects of this issue (Jetschke, 2009; Wong, 2012; Chaban et al, 2013; Murray and Moxon-Browne, 2013; Murray, 2015; Allison, 2015). One of the focal points of these studies—especially in light of the structural reforms completed by ASEAN through the ASEAN Charter that was signed in 2007—is whether ASEAN was influenced by the EU.…”

“…Consequently, this paper contributes to the lively scholarly and policy debate about the relevance of the EU's model of integration for the Asian region and as a model of regional organization for ASEAN (Berkofksy, 2005;Capannelli, 2009;Murray, 2010;Murray and Moxon-Browne, 2013;Poli, 2014;Secretary General of ASEAN, 2007;Wong, 2012;Murray, 2015;Allison, 2015;Allison-Reumann and Murray, 2017;Suder, 2017). This article takes the position that on matters relating to refugee protection and inter-state solidarity, the EU's asylum system, and its response to refugee challenges, is far from a model of good regional governance (Longo and Murray, 2015).…”
