Masterclasses are a proven tool to engage high school students with particle physics. In a Masterclass, participants learn about high energy physics in a day-long course. Moreover, they can actively take part in cutting-edge research and experience methods and tools used in research by performing a tailor-made physics analysis involving real LHC data under the supervision of physicists. During a Masterclass students not only explore the fundamental forces and building blocks of nature, but they can also improve their understanding of science and the scientific discovery process. Particle Physics Masterclasses offer an authentic experience and add a new dimension to physics education at school, thus stimulating the students´ interest in science. More than 300 Masterclasses are organized in the framework of the program International Masterclasses each year. During a 6-week period spanning roughly February to April, research institutes and universities in more than 50 countries invite high school students for a Masterclass. At the end of each day, the participants join in a videoconference with other student groups and CERN, Fermilab, or TRIUMF. Like an international research collaboration, they share and combine the results of their analyses and can thus experience for themselves an important part of the experimental particle physics working process. The program attracts more than 13,000 high school students each year and is run by IPPOG, the International Particle Physics Outreach Group, and is centrally coordinated at Technische Universität Dresden and University of Notre Dame. The successful Particle Physics Masterclasses are also arranged in other contexts. In 2017, an extra effort was started by IPPOG to support and promote the access of girls to science. To accomplish this, IPPOG launched Masterclass activities especially for girls on the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In Germany, the nationwide program Netzwerk Teilchenwelt, which includes 30 universities and research labs, has been established. For Netzwerk Teilchenwelt, Particle Physics Masterclasses are instrumental as a basic level, but is builds up several higher levels of engagement, e.g. workshops at CERN or research projects at universities and institutes for the most motivated and interested high school students. On total, this program offers activities for 4000 high school students per year on four levels. In the United States, QuarkNet offers International Masterclasses, a World Wide Data Day with LHC data, and Masterclass preparation activities as important components of a program to bring particle physics to high school teachers and students.

Estudos recentes pautados na participação de estudantes da Europa nesse evento também apontam que a diferença de gênero nãoé fator determinante para o engajamento dos alunos nas atividades do evento e que apesar de estar fixado em um intervalo curto de tempo, promove um maior interesse dos estudantes pelos temas atuais da física [11]. Nessa perspectiva o evento Masterclasses -Hands on se apoia em uma estrutura conceitual e experimental da ciência produzida no LHC e que propomos, no caso do IFUSP, como condução dessas atividades, uma postura de abertura do diálogo que promova outros debates que mostrem-se potenciais para oâmbito da ACT.…”

Neste trabalho vamos discutir e apresentar dados de pesquisa sobre um evento de divulgação científica mundial desenvolvido pelos pesquisadores do laboratório CERN que tem como público alvo estudantes do ensino médio. Baseados nos pressupostos da alfabetização científico-tecnológica (ACT) e na procura pelo engajamento dos alunos em temas da física contemporânea discutiremos o papel das atividades do Masterclasses - Hands on na formação de jovens estudantes. Inicialmente iremos apontar as reformulações em relação às atividades do CERN que o evento ocorrido no Instituto de Física da USP propôs a fim de o aproximar do contexto educacional dos participantes. Em um segundo momento, buscaremos discutir elementos que emergem da fala dos estudantes em relação aos sentidos atribuídos à ciência quando os alunos participam de um evento de divulgação científica como apresentado aqui. Os resultados apontam que a interação e os debates com os cientistas proporcionaram reflexões que apresentam perspectivas da ACT e que indicam potencialidades para conduzir futuras atividades no evento.

Abstract.International Masterclasses provide an opportunity for high school students to be "scientists for a day". 15-to 19-year-old students in countries around the whole world are invited to one of about 160 nearby universities or research centres for one day in order to take part in an authentic research process. Lectures from active scientists give insight in topics and methods of basic research at the fundaments of matter and forces, enabling the students to perform measurements on real data from CERN's Large Hadron Collider. At the end of each day, like in an international research collaboration, the participants join in a video conference with other students groups and CERN for discussion and combination of their results. In 2013, about 10.000 students from 37 countries participated in the program. International Masterclasses are organised by IPPOG (International Particle Physics Outreach Group) and have the potential to add valuable experiences to physics education in school environments. Bringing LHC Data to School ChildrenWith the start-up of the new and powerful particle accelerator LHC, a new era in research has dawned. The LHC is used by physicists to study the smallest known particles -the fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionize our understanding of nature, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe. Results of the experiments are followed with great interest, not only by physicists but also by the general public. International Masterclasses allow high school students to experience this research at close range. The basic idea of the annual program is to let students work as much as possible like real scientists.
