EUROPEAN PINE SHOOT MOTH, RHYACIONIA BUOLIANA (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE): IDENTIFICATION OF ADDITIONAL PHEROMONE COMPONENTS RESULTING IN AN IMPROVED LURE

Abstract: Investigation of the European pine shoot moth pheromone has revealed three components in addition to the previously identified E-9-dodecenyl acetate (E9-12:Ac): E-9-dodecenol, dodecyl acetate, and dodecanol. Inclusion of E-9-dodecenol makes lures more attractive to the moth than unmated females or E9-12:Ac alone. Dodecyl acetate had no apparent effect when added to this more attractive mixture whereas dodecanol had an inhibitory effect. Dodecyl acetate appeared to mask the inhibitory effect of dodecanol when 0… Show more

“…Field testing of candidate pheromones. Experiments 1-9 were conducted in Yunan in plantations of Arabica coffee with low to moderate CWSB densities (dϭproportions of infested plants) [Nestlé Experimental and Demonstration (E&D) Farm (30 km west of Jinghong; dϽ0.005), Dahaishan (55 km southwest of Mengla; dϾ0.050), Paliang (30 km southwest of Menglian; dϭ0.020), Dakaihe (25 km south of Simao; dϭ0.030), and Jinping (50 km east of Puer; dϭ0.040)], using Lindgren 4-funnel traps (Phero Tech Inc., Delta, British Columbia, V4G 1E9) and sticky delta traps (Gray et al, 1984). A small insecticidal Diclorvos cube (Green Cross, Division of Ciba Geigy Canada Ltd., Mississauga, Ontario, L4Z 2Z1) placed in the receptacle of funnel traps assured rapid death of captured beetles.…”

“…Sticky 2-L milk-carton Delta traps (Gray et al 1984) were suspended from trees 2 m above ground and baited with a grey rubber septum (West Co., Lionville, Pennsylvania) impregnated with pheromone components in 10-100 pL of hexane (HPLC grade). Field experiments were conducted from 1994 to 1996, using single rows of mature (>40 cm diameter at breast height) ornamental cherry trees spaced >15 m apart along the boulevards of suburban streets in New Westminster and Vancouver, British Columbia.…”

“…Single virgin 1-4-day-old female D. bradleyi (N = 9; experiment 5), D. trima (N = 29; experiment 6), S. asigna (N = 16; experiment 7) and S. nitens (N= 15; experiment 8) were confined in a screened cylindrical cage (3 × 5 cm) and provisioned with a sugar water drenched cotton ball. Cages were placed in the middle of self-made sticky delta traps (Gray et al 1984) suspended from palms 1.5 m above ground at 27 m intervals. Captured males were recorded every 15 min from 17:30-23:00 hr.…”
