Europium retention onto clay minerals from 25 to 150°C: Experimental measurements, spectroscopic features and sorption modelling

Abstract: The sorption of Eu(III) onto kaolinite and montmorillonite was investigated up to 150°C. The clays were purified samples, saturated with Na in the case of montmorillonite. Batch experiments were conducted at 25, 40, 80 and 150°C in 0.5 M NaClO 4 solutions to measure the distribution coefficients (Kd) of Eu as a trace element (<10 À6 mol/L) between the solution and kaolinite. For the Na-montmorillonite, we used Kd results from a previous study [Tertre, E., Berger, G., Castet, S., Loubet, M., Giffaut, E., 2005. … Show more

“…The structure of these Ln-bentonites is studied by XRD, XRF, SEM-EDX, complexometric titration, ICP-OES and Mössbauer-spectroscopy. The results can prove the suggestion by Coppin et al [16], Wu et al [19], and Tertre et al [17] on the intercalation of Ln ions in the interlayer of smectite. In addition, information will be shown on the structural parameters of trivalent lanthanide cation exchanged bentonites.…”

“…The conclusion was that the heavy Lns are being more sorbed than the light Lns at high ionic strength, because of the formation of inner-sphere complexes. Tertre et al [17] studied the sorption of Eu(III) onto kaolinite and montmorillonite. At the studied temperature, adsorption is the sole process of Eu(III) retention.…”

“…The surface charge of kaolinite is predominately controlled by charge determining reactions of surface groups, in particular acid/base reactions of the aluminol and silanol groups. At seawater pH, both types of surfaces are expected to carry a net negative charge (Tertre et al, 2006 . The surface charge of montmorillonite depends only to a minor extent on protonation and deprotonation of surface sites due to the negative layer charge and adsorption of negatively charged ions onto the montmorillonite surface is typically electrostatically unfavorable.…”

“…Therefore, the strong sorption of Eu 3? onto Th 4 (PO 4 ) 4 P 2 O 7 is mainly attributed to surface complexation or strong chemical sorption rather than electrostatic sorption [39].…”
