Eurydesma–Lyonia fauna (Early Permian) from the Itararé group, Paraná Basin (Brazil): A paleobiogeographic W–E trans-Gondwanan marine connection

Abstract: Here, the biocorrelation of the marine invertebrate assemblages of the post-glacial succession in the uppermost portion of the Late Paleozoic Itararé Group (Paraná Basin, Brazil) is for the first time firmly constrained with other well-dated Gondwanan faunas. The correlation and ages of these marine assemblages are among the main controversial issues related to Brazilian Gondwana geology. In total, 118 brachiopod specimens were analyzed, and at least seven species were identified: Lyonia rochacamposi sp. nov.,… Show more

“…6). further south, the Deseado Massif (e.g., Taboada et al, 2016). Paleobiogeographic studies by Taboada and Shi (2011) indicate that the Tepuel-Genoa basin would have been located at high latitudes (approximately 70º) between the middle Carboniferous and the earliest Permian.…”

“…The fossil assemblages found in the studied locations have strong similarities with fossils found in other Gondwana basins in western Australia, Brazil, the Falkland Islands, Oman and South Africa (Table 1; Ghosh 2003; Fielding et al . 2006; Stephenson et al 2007; Taboada et al 2016; Horan et al 2019; Simoes et al 2020). Sahni and Dutt (1959) characterized its brachiopod assemblage by Trigonotreta hesdodoensis .…”

“…Also, this location is considered one of the most important fossiliferous sites of the Itararé Group in the Paraná Basin, with a great variety of fossil groups. The fossiliferous Lontras shale (Hamel 2005;Ricetti & Weinschütz, 2011;Adami-Rodrigues et al 2012;Mouro et al 2014;Taboada et al 2016;Wilner, Lemos & Scomazzon 2016;Mouro et al 2018) is stratigraphically positioned at the base of the Rio do Sul Formation, which is the upper unit of the Itararé Group according to Schneider et al (1974). In this locality, a collection of about 300 meters of drill cores were the object of study by Weinschütz and Castro (2004), Weinschütz and Castro (2005) and Weinschütz and Castro (2006).…”
