Physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) has emerged as a promising fruit crop in Ecuador, but the recent identification of rust poses a potential threat to its productive development. This study focused on elucidating the morphological aspects of the basidiomycete and assessing rust intensity across different canopy levels of physic nut hybrids and genotypes under field and semi-controlled conditions in Manabí, Ecuador. For the first time, this study confirms that Phakopsora arthuriana should be responsible for rust on physic nut in Ecuador based on the characteristics of the fungal structures. Rust incidence was 100% across all canopy layers, with the lower and middle canopies exhibiting higher severity and lesion numbers than the upper canopy. Using the Weibull nonlinear distribution model, we epidemiologically modeled disease progression, revealing that hybrid JAT 001100 displayed the highest temporal progress, recording 15% severity and an area under the disease progression curve of 3228.9 units. Promising genotypes CP-041 and CP-052 demonstrated lower rust intensity. Environmental parameters, including dew point, temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity, were correlated with rust severity and lesion numbers. In greenhouse assays, hybrid JAT 001165 showed higher severity, whereas JAT 001103 and JAT 001164 had more lesions than other genotypes. In contrast, promising genotypes CP-041 and CP-052 consistently exhibited lower rust intensity in both field and greenhouse environments. This study demonstrated that P. arthuriana could be epidemiologically modeled with the Weibull model, providing crucial insights into the dynamic interplay between rust infection and physic nut hybrids and genotypes under diverse conditions in the Manabí region of Ecuador.

The combined effect of scarification treatment and the growing medium on the germination and emergence parameters ofEnterolobiumcyclocarpum (Jacq.) Griseb seeds was evaluated under nursery conditions in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. A fullfactorial experiment was designed with three scarification treatments: 1) mechanical (breaking of the testa with tweezers), 2)thermal (immersion in boiling water for 10 min), and 3) control (without scarification), combined with three growing media: 1)potting mix (peat moss, perlite, vermiculite; 50-25-25), 2) aerobic compost, and 3) bush soil. The results of the study confirm thatscarification, mechanical or thermal, is effective in breaking the physical dormancy of E.cyclocarpum seeds; although, mechanicalscarification promotes higher emergence speed of the seedlings. While growing medium did not significantly affect the seedemergence parameters, we found that thermal scarification combined with bush soil induced a marginally higher emergencepercentage. The study contributes to the knowledge of the real efficiency of pre-germination treatments in E.cyclocarpum seedsunder different cultivation conditions in the nursery.

A GIS Approach Land Suitability and Availability Analysis of Jatropha Curcas L. Growth in Mexico as a Potential Source for Biodiesel Production

Jatropha curcas L. (JCL) commercial plantations in Mexico, one of the most important JCL origin centers, have failed due to a variety of biological, political and technical factors affecting their productivity. This study explores feasible sites of JCL cultivation as a potential source for biodiesel production in Mexico, given agroclimatic and agroecological considerations. We propose a GIS-based approach for estimating suitable and available lands to grow JCL by integrating an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in the ArcGIS software. Spatial analysis combined multiple data, different evaluation criteria, three land availability classes (high, medium and low potential) and took into account ecological, ethical, and political restrictions, and considering two scenarios with different restriction levels. Suitability and availability maps were generated using agroclimatic information (climatic, land use/soil, and climate change and extreme weather events risk) together with other socioeconomic factors. Approximately 15.3% of Mexican territory is available for JCL production yielding a biodiesel production of 9.683 Mm3/year. Amelioration of the available land is necessary to improve land selection. GIS-based analysis represents a first approach to establish a successful biodiesel project that avoids, competition with food or feed production, maintains biodiversity conservation, and promotes biofuel supply chain development. This procedure would also be applicable to other energy crops such as oil palm and Ricinus communis.
