Biodiversitas 19: 1586-1592. Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) is aunique plant of the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province of Indonesia and locally known as the unity symbol woody fragrance (haumeni). The study aimed to compare growth quality of trees grown in plantations and forests in the districts of North Central Timor(TTU) and South Central Timor (TTS). Vegetation analysis was held by purposive sampling in eight sites comprising 87 plots. Plotssizes were 20x20 m2 for trees, 10x10 m2 for poles, and 5x5 m2 for saplings. Variables observed in each plot included density, trunkdiameter, height, crown quality, and vitality. Data were analyzed by descriptive and multivariate statistics. The results showed that thegrowth of sandalwoods varied spatially in all study sites and was classified into five groups. Two plantations in TTS District showedbetter trees growth quality compared to those in TTU. Higher saplings and poles density were found in two sites, a plantation and aforest in TTU plantation, and in a forest in TTS. However higher vitality were found in two plantations, each one in TTS and TTU.Inferior growth was observed in Nununamat plantation. Farmers had a significant role in strengthening sandalwood conservation in twodistricts as shown by their successful farming and trees growth quality that was similar to those in the forests.

After being introduced to Indonesia, Swietenia macrophylla King. has since been widely planted for community and plantation forests in several locations. This study was carried out to ascertain the growth variation, heritability, and genetic correlation of the 1-year-old S. macrophylla progeny trial in Trenggalek, East Java. This progeny trial was designed of incomplete block design (IBD), and the plant materials are 50 families from Banjar-Ciamis, Samigaluh-Kulonprogo, Dlingo-Bantul, Bondowoso-East Java, and Lombok-West Nusa Tenggara. Three individuals were planted in line tree plot for each family, repeated 6 times with a spacing of 4m x 2m. According to the findings, the Bondowoso land race had the best growth with a height and stem diameter of 0.81 m and 1.12 cm, respectively. Families’ varying heights were divided into 14 groups, and the stem diameter was divided into 13 groups. The stem diameter has individual and family heritabilities of 0.23 (moderate) and 0.53 (moderate), respectively, whereas the height’s individual and family heritabilities are 0.39 (high) and 0.65 (high), respectively. Height and stem diameter showed a positive and strong of genetic correlation (0.90).

Alstonia angustiloba is a local tree species that have potential for community forest plantation; therefore, it is important to provide improved seeds. This study aimed to determine the diversity of growth, estimate the value of heritability, and the genetic correlation of the 4-years-old A. angustiloba progeny test. Randomized Completely Block Design with two factors (population and family) were used in this study. In this study, families are nested in the population. The population factors consisted of 4 levels, and family factors consisted of 43 families. The analysis of variance showed that height and stem diameter growth were significantly different between populations and families at four years old. The best height and stem diameter growth at the population level was obtained from the Pendopo population, 4.45 m and 7.71 cm, respectively. At the family level, the best height growth was obtained from 9 families (4.46-5.06 m), and the best stem diameter growth was obtained from 11 families (7.48-8.72 cm). The estimated individual heritability value for height was 0.41, and stem diameter was 0.23. Estimated family heritability values were 0.66 for height and 0.50 for stem diameter. The genetic correlation between height and stem diameter was 0.97.
