Evaluate the Therapeutic Effect of Allicin (L-cysteine) on Clinical Presentation and Prognosis in Patients with COVID-19

Abstract: The antiviral effectiveness of allicin (L-cysteine) has been shown by numerous studies in both levels of clinical and animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of allicin (L-cysteine) on clinical presentation and prognosis. In the current study, 66 patients with COVID-19 based on clinical, radiological presentations and RT-PCR results, were enrolled in two groups of placebo and allicin. In the both allicin (L-cysteine) and placebo groups (n=33 in each group), the capsules were presc… Show more

“…A study performed with 146 participants that consumed an allicin-containing supplement for 12 weeks revealed that its intake can reduce the incidence and prevent the associated symptoms of the common cold [26]. In line with these results, another similar study that included 65 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 showed that the intake of allicin capsules for 2 weeks could have a significant impact on improving clinical symptoms and accelerating the healing process [27]. Thus, a higher potential activity of garlic extract rich in allicin in controlling viral infections has been reported [28].…”

“…And its antioxidant properties make it a good therapeutic agent for impaired sperm quality (45). Several investigations confirmed the benefit of supplementation of caffeine or L-cysteine in clinical susceptibility, presentation, and prognosis for COVID-19 patients, possibly through blocking the virus from penetrating host cells or decreasing viral replication by preventing the action of 3chymotrypsin-like proteases (46,47). What's more, adding caffeine had a beneficial effect on sperm motility and metabolism to some extent (48) Biotin was regarded as a protector during cryopreserving human spermatozoa, improving the motility and lifetime of frozen-thawed spermatozoa (49).…”

“…In addition to peppermint powder-added for sensory purposes to all products-product A contained 5% wild garlic powder, while product B contained 3% allicin, an organosulphur compound extracted from garlic. Natural products, including garlic, have been increasingly investigated for their antibacterial [23] and antiviral [24] properties with a number of recent studies highlighting their potential against SARS-CoV-2 [25][26][27][28][29]. Given that the primary difference between product A and products B and C is the presence of wild garlic powder, it seems likely that this component is responsible for the virucidal activity.…”
