Evaluating and Diagnosing Road Intersection Operation Performance Using Floating Car Data

Abstract: Urban road intersections play an important role in deciding the total travel time and the overall travel efficiency. In this paper, an innovative traffic grid model has been proposed, which evaluates and diagnoses the traffic status and the time delay at intersections across whole urban road networks. This method is grounded on a massive amount of floating car data sampled at a rate of 3 s, and it is composed of three major parts. (1) A grid model is built to transform intersections into discrete cells, and th… Show more

“…The data used in this case study include about 110 million floating cars' trajectories, which the geographic coordinate ranges from 116.399450 to 116.431700 and the 39.947934 to 39.966344. The data are the same as those used in the previous study [9,29]. Figure 2a shows the trajectory points, and according to trajectories, we can obtain the topology of the intersection (see Figure 2b).…”

“…It is necessary to preprocess the FCD to reduce the impact of error data and improve the prediction results accuracy. A more detailed data preprocessing process has been described in previous studies [9,16,29]. This paper introduces two main steps as follows:…”

“…Probe vehicles resulted useful in estimating traffic flow characteristics and, thus, identifying congestion. Some researchers used FCD to evaluate traffic flow at intersections [329][330][331] and turbo-roundabouts [332]. Traffic speed can also be estimated by using FCD [333,334].…”

“…The mobile detective data from the vehicle have a wide coverage and continuous space, and the huge daily traffic data make the prediction of the traffic state more accurate and reliable. Emerging technologies based on Global Positioning System (GPS) enable us to track vehicle trajectories and collect real-time traffic data across entire road networks [7], and have been introduced to predict the AS of road segments. Queen and Albers [8] proposed a dynamic Bayesian model to identify lagged causal relationships between time series, and predict traffic speed at multiple road link locations.…”
