Evaluating Antibiograms To Monitor Drug Resistance

Abstract: We used hospital antibiograms to assess predominant pathogens and their patterns of in vitro antimicrobial resistance in central Illinois, USA. We found a lack of information about national guidelines for in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing and differences in interpretation among laboratories in the region.

“…The continuous surveillance of antibiotic resistance trends in bacteria isolated from hospital-acquired infections is essential for the selection of adequate initial empiric therapy [6,7]. The laboratory-based antibiograms is efficacious as a guide for the rational selection of antimicrobial therapy, and to alert healthcare providers to the presence of unusual or emerging antimicrobial mechanisms [8]. The evaluation of antimicrobial resistance in gram-negative bacterial strains in two Mexican hospitals during 2005–2010 is presented.…”

“…The reason is that the suppurative infection of the skin, ear, and eye are common occurrences in hospitalized patients as well as in the outpatients department. Furthermore wound infection is regarded as the most common nosocomial infection among surgical patients 8 . It has been associated with increased trauma care, prolonged hospitals stay, and treatment 9 .…”

“…The spread of resistance has repeatedly been shown to be associated with antibiotic therapy, which once again stresses the need for rational use of these drugs. [1,2] Reliable statistics on antibiotic resistance and policies that are mandatory to control spread of resistant pathogens are available from the developed nations. These data generated by large surveillance studies in countries such as the USA, Europe, Australia, etc.…”
