The establishment and management of protected areas are costly, and nature conservation authorities especially in developing countries face huge problems in financing these costs. While it is well established that effective biodiversity conservation increases the attractiveness of a protected area for visitors, the management effectiveness in many parks suffers from the lack of funds. This paper deals with the willingness to pay of international visitors for an increase of admission fees in order to cover management costs in a prominent national park in Nepal (Langtang national park). The results of the on-site survey indicate that international visitors would be willing to pay entry fees that are much higher than those currently charged (local visitors are currently exempt from paying entry fees). Compared to the existing entry fees of 30 USD, visitors would -on average -be willing to pay about 64 USD per visit. An econometric estimation of the determinants of WTP shows that visitors whose experience in the park is above average are also willing to pay higher entry fees. In addition, visitors would also accept temporary or spatial restrictions of access if these policies would improve the conservation of biodiversity. With respect to conclusions regarding the management of protected areas, the study clearly shows that entry fees of international visitors may be significantly increased in order to broaden the financial basis for effective and efficient biodiversity conservation with the ultimate goal of sharing the benefits of conservation with the local population.

RESUMONas últimas duas décadas surgiram metodologias e procedimentos técnicos, que visam avaliar o nível de efetividade das áreas protegidas, com o intuito de identificar a real capacidade dessas áreas em planejar e implementar políticas públicas, relacionadas a temática socioeconômica e ambiental. Nesse contexto o presente estudo, surge com a finalidade de analisar as metodologias (WWF (1999), Padovan (2003), Ervin (2003, Stolton et al. (2007), Marinelli (2011) e ICMBIO/WWF (2017), aplicadas e adaptadas à realidade brasileira, considerando estrutura metodológica, aplicação, vantagens e limitações. Dessa forma, intenciona-se avançar nas discussões metodológicas propostas e analisar o seu nível de contribuição para com o planejamento e gestão dessas áreas protegidas. ABSTRACTOver the last two decades, technical methodologies and procedures have emerged to assess the effectiveness of protected areas in order to identify the real capacity of these areas to plan and implement public policies related to socioeconomic and environmental issues. In this context, the present study arose with the purpose of analyzing the methodologies (Padovan, 2003), Ervin (2003), Stolton et al. (2007), Marinelli (2011) and ICMBIO / WWF GOT, n.º 16 -Revista de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território (março de 2019) GOT, nr. 16 -Geography and Spatial Planning Journal (March 2019) 204(2017) applied and adapted to the Brazilian reality, considering methodological structure, application, advantages and limitations. Thus, it is intended to advance in the proposed methodological discussions and to analyze their level of contribution to the planning and management of these protected areas.

<b>Rapid assessment of sacred groves: a biodiversity assessment tool for ground level practitioners</b>

Sacred groves in the Western Ghats are culturally preserved patches of forests that are rich in diversity owing to protection by several generations of local people, providing excellent examples of community based conservation. Sacred groves harbour local populations, preserve genetic resources and serve as reference sites and corridors between protected areas. They are considered to be cornerstones of biodiversity conservation, but are insufficient in scale and number to significantly address many aspects of the management of landscapes and biodiversity. We studied 13 sacred groves in Pune District that are at present outside the protected areas of the northern Western Ghats, where we employed a simple and rapid biodiversity assessment technique that can be replicated by frontline foresters, local residents and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs). Integrating these sacred sites into the conservation network through local support can improve the efficiency for the existing protected area network in this ecologically fragile region.
