The existence of bedding planes in natural shale formations makes the fracture characterization remarkably complicated. To achieve a further understanding of the anisotropic crack extension behaviors of shale using a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach, four groups of three-point bending tests on Longmaxi shale from southeast Chongqing were conducted in this study with different bedding plane inclination angles. The fracture propagation paths were observed using a scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that cracks initiated along the bedding plane when the bedding plane inclination angle (i.e., the angle between the loading direction and the normal direction of the bedding plane) was relatively large; in contrast, cracks penetrated into the matrix and induced higher fracture toughness in cases with lower bedding plane inclination angle. Brittle fractures occurred in the tested shale, and the fracture strength was strongly dependent on the bedding plane inclination angle. Meanwhile, the stress field around the crack tip was analyzed theoretically. The results indicated that the crack tip stress field of anisotropic shale is not only determined by the stress intensity factor but also related to the elastic constants and bedding plane inclination angle. Furthermore, a criterion for determining whether a crack extends along the bedding plane was developed by distinguishing the differences in the strengths of the shale bedding and the matrix.

As shown by Wrobel, Mishuris, and Piccolroaz (2017), the hydraulically induced tangential traction on fracture walls changes local displacement and stress fields. This resulted in the formulation of a new hydraulic fracture (HF) propagation condition based on the critical value of the energy release rate that accounts for the hydraulically-induced shear stress. Therefore it is clear that the crack direction criteria, which depend on the tip distributions of the stress and strain fields, need to be changed. We analyse the two commonly used criteria, one based on the maximum circumferential stress (MCS) and another - on the minimum strain energy density (MSED). We show that the impact of the hydraulically induced shear stress on the direction of the crack propagation is negligible in the case of large material resistance to fracture, while for small toughness the effect is significant. Moreover, values of the redirection angles, corresponding to the so-called viscosity dominated regime (KIC???0), depend dramatically on the ratios of the stress intensity factors.publishersversionPeer reviewe

This study used numerical analysis to carry out a large number of numerical model calculations based on a new semicircular bend (SCB) model. Instead of existing numerical computation methods (J-integral), the M-integral method was used to calculate the mixed mode fracture parameters (KI, KII, and KIII), investigate the influence of the geometry and material parameters on the fracture behavior under mixed mode I/III loading, and predict the fracture path. The results revealed that the limitations in the scope of the mixity parameter Me in the previous studies can be overcome to a certain extent. The range of Me was established under different Poisson ratios and can be used as a reference for actual material testing. The simulation path is in good agreement with the experimentally obtained fracture path, and the proposed method can be used to simulate the fracture path under mixed mode I/III loading.
