Evaluating the effectiveness of video feedback to improve cheerleader tumbling skills

Sara Kate Snapp,
Raymond G. Miltenberger,
Heather M. Zerger

Abstract: The current study evaluated the effectiveness of video feedback (VF) to improve tumbling skills with three high‐school cheerleaders. Researchers evaluated the effects of VF using a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Results demonstrate that VF was effective in increasing the percentage of correct steps of the target skills for all three participants. This study contributes to the literature on the use of VF as a procedure to increase sports performance.

“…Broadly, the results are consistent with single-subject experimental research showing the success of video feedback alone for improving athletic performance in other sports such as martial arts (BenitezSantiago & Miltenberger, 2016), tumbling (Snapp et al, 2023), weight training (Cochrane et al, 2022), horseback riding (Kelley & Miltenberger, 2016), rock climbing (Walker et al, 2020). Reliably replicating the effects of a given intervention across several studies is a critical component of demonstrating generality for single-subject research (Kratochwill et al, 2010;Walker & Carr, 2021), thus the current study contributes to this line of study showing a base of evidence (Walker & Carr, 2021).…”

“…This study is one more extension of the growing body of research demonstrating the effectiveness of video feedback to enhance athletic performance (e.g., BenitezSantiago & Miltenberger, 2016;Boyer et al, 2009;Capalbo et al, 2022;Cochrane et al, 2022;Kelley & Miltenberger, 2016;Snapp et al, 2023). This study adds to this literature, illustrating the implementation of video feedback in an efficient and accessible way to improve running mechanics, a novel and important target behavior.…”
